Nicolas Cage Calls AI Performances a 'Dead End', as 'Robots Cannot Reflect the Human Condition'

Nicolas Cage condemns the use of artificial intelligence in acting, warning that actors who allow AI to influence their performances are heading towards "a dead end." In his Saturn Awards acceptance speech for Best Actor (Dream Scenario), Cage voiced his concerns.

Variety reports Cage's speech, where he thanked director Kristoffer Borgli, then transitioned to his AI concerns. He stated a belief in preventing robots from dictating artistic dreams, arguing that robots are incapable of truly reflecting the human condition. He warned that allowing AI manipulation, even minimally, will compromise artistic integrity and truth, ultimately prioritizing financial gain over artistic merit.

Cage emphasized the role of art, including acting, in mirroring the human condition through thoughtful, emotional recreation—a process he believes AI cannot replicate. He predicted that AI-driven performances would lack heart, lose their edge, and become bland, resulting in a robotic, rather than human, portrayal of life. He urged actors to protect themselves against AI interference, advocating for authentic and honest self-expression.

Cage's stance echoes those of other actors who have expressed similar concerns, particularly in the voice acting field, where AI has been used to recreate entire performances, even in major video games. Ned Luke (Grand Theft Auto 5) and Doug Cockle (The Witcher) are among those who have criticized AI's impact on voice actors' livelihoods, describing AI-driven chatbots as a form of income theft.

The filmmaking community is also divided on the issue. Tim Burton expressed deep unease regarding AI-generated art, while Zack Snyder advocates for embracing AI's potential rather than resisting it.
