After the exciting reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 this morning, the buzz around using Joy-Con controllers as a mouse is heating up. In the reveal trailer, there's a tantalizing moment where a pair of detached Joy-Cons are shown being placed onto a surface, attachment side down. They then connect to a pair of connectors that appear to have flat bottoms, and smoothly slide across the surface, much like a mouse gliding over a mouse pad. If you look closely, you can even spot what looks like a slider pad on the bottom of one of the connectors, adding more fuel to the speculation.
Rumors had been swirling ahead of the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal that this functionality might be possible, thanks to a sensor inside the Joy-Cons similar to those found in computer mice. However, Nintendo has yet to officially confirm these rumors or detail what this feature would mean for gamers. Enthusiasts have speculated that this could enhance gameplay for titles like Civilization, which traditionally benefit from mouse and keyboard controls. Others believe that, given Nintendo's innovative history, this feature might be integrated into their first-party software in unique and unexpected ways. The possibilities are still wide open.
While there's much we don't know about potential mouse support for the Switch 2 and the function of the mysterious new Joy-Con button, we do have some solid information. The console is officially named the Nintendo Switch 2, set to launch in 2025, and a new Mario Kart game is in development for it. It will be backward compatible with the original Switch, and more details on the software lineup will be shared at a Direct in April.
