Recent reports suggest the Nintendo Switch 2's rumored "C" button, a key feature distinguishing it from its predecessor, may be dedicated to chat functionality. This revelation could significantly clarify one of the console's most intriguing unknowns.
Since late 2024, numerous leaks have surfaced regarding the Switch 2, largely attributed to the console entering mass production. These leaks consistently depict an extra button, a dark gray "C," located on the right Joy-Con below the home button. However, the button's function remained a mystery until now.
Datamining the latest Switch OS update by a growing Discord community dedicated to the Switch 2 uncovered a feature codenamed "Campus." This feature appears to be linked to group and voice chat support for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.
The same source indicates "Campus" will also enable screen sharing, supporting groups of up to 12 users. While the codename begins with "C," the button's function is more likely tied to "chat" than "Campus" itself, debunking theories suggesting its use for screen casting.
Group and voice chats necessitate internet connectivity, likely restricting access to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. This raises questions, given the original Switch's deliberate avoidance of such features. The omission of chat functionality contributed to the Switch's kid-friendly design, and reintroducing it, potentially through a feature similar to Miiverse text chat, could introduce complexities Nintendo might prefer to avoid.
The existence and purpose of the "C" button, along with other Switch 2 features, will likely be clarified soon. Multiple sources point to an official announcement this Thursday, January 16th.
