Path of Exile 2: Unlocking the Secrets of Citadels

After conquering the main campaign and Acts 1-3 on Cruel difficulty, players unlock the Endgame and the Atlas of Worlds. Navigating this Atlas presents unique challenges and gameplay mechanics, including Realmgates, Lost Towers, Burning Monoliths, and Citadels. Citadels, particularly elusive endgame objectives, are crucial for accessing the pinnacle boss.

What are Citadels?

Citadels are unique map nodes in PoE 2, existing in three forms: Iron, Copper, and Stone. Each houses a powerful, enhanced version of a campaign boss:

  • Iron Citadel: Count Geonor (Act 1 boss). Appears as a large city with black walls.
  • Copper Citadel: Jamanra, The Abomination (Act 2 boss). Resembles a large encampment.
  • Stone Citadel: Doryani (Act 3 boss). Looks like a stone pyramid.

Defeating these bosses yields Crisis Fragments, keys to the Burning Monolith and its pinnacle boss, the Arbiter of Ash, completing the "Pinnacle of Flame" quest. Access requires a minimum Tier 15 Waystone. Citadels are one-time encounters; once completed, they cannot be revisited.

Finding Citadels: Strategies and Tips

The 0.1.1 update significantly improves Citadel visibility. A bright beacon now marks their location, even through the Fog of War.

If Citadels remain hidden, try these strategies:

  • Linear Exploration: Travel in a straight line across the Atlas to reveal maximum Fog of War.
  • Lost Tower Strategy: Lost Towers reveal significant areas; explore around them.
  • Biome Targeting: Citadels tend to spawn in specific biomes:
    • Iron Citadels: Grass or Forest
    • Copper Citadels: Desert
    • Stone Citadels: Coastal areas
  • Strategic Spacing: Citadels rarely cluster. After finding one, explore a completely different direction.

With the 0.1.1 update's improved visibility, Citadels should be readily apparent within a few screens of explored areas. If not, revert to the linear exploration strategy. The beacon will guide you.
