TouchArcade Review: Razer Kishi Ultra - A Full-Sized Mobile Gaming Experience

Razer Kishi Ultra

Razer's Kishi Ultra mobile controller, initially teased in April, has finally arrived, boasting impressive features like customizable analog stick deadzones and broad compatibility. While significantly pricier than competitors at $149.99, its feature set and comfort justify the cost for many. This review compares it to long-standing favorites like the Razer Kishi and Backbone One, highlighting what sets it apart.

Razer Kishi Ultra Packaging

Unboxing and Accessories:

The Razer Kishi Ultra package includes the controller, rubber cushions for various devices (iPhone, iPad Mini 6th Gen, Android), stickers, and an instruction manual. The absence of a carrying case at this price point is a notable omission.

The rubber cushions are labeled for specific devices and are unnecessary if using a phone case.

Compatibility:

Unlike many telescopic controllers limited to iPhones and Android devices, the Razer Kishi Ultra extends compatibility to the iPad Mini 6th generation. Testing involved an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 14 Plus, and wired connection to an iPad Pro. While not formally tested on Android or Windows, it functioned as a generic Xbox gamepad on a Steam Deck, even supporting rumble features in compatible games.

Controls and Performance:

The Razer Kishi Ultra's controls exceeded expectations. The d-pad performed admirably in various games, from retro titles like Garou: Mark of the Wolves ACA NeoGeo to modern hits like Hades and Hitman Blood Money Reprisal. Shoulder buttons and triggers maintain Razer's high standard, offering a responsive and satisfying feel. Analog sticks are smooth and comfortable, and the face buttons, while clicky, have a slightly longer travel distance than anticipated.

The textured grip is comfortable for extended play sessions, even exceeding several hours. While Chroma lighting is included, the lack of dynamic in-game lighting synchronization is a missed opportunity.

New Features:

The standout feature is the full-size form factor. Unlike its predecessor or the Backbone One, the Kishi Ultra provides a console-like feel, significantly enhancing comfort. Additional features include Chroma customization (via app), haptics (Android and Windows), and virtual controller mode (Android only). The latter proves useful for Android games lacking native controller support. Other features include a 3.5mm headphone jack, 15W passthrough charging, and L4/R4 shoulder buttons.

iOS Limitations:

Haptics and virtual controller mode are currently exclusive to Android (and Windows for haptics). The absence of haptics on iOS is a notable drawback, diminishing the overall experience compared to Android.

Value Proposition:

While a wireless PS5 or Xbox controller offers a cheaper alternative for iOS users, the Kishi Ultra's telescopic design and superior comfort justify the higher price for those seeking a wired mobile solution. The lack of haptics on iOS, however, impacts its value proposition. Long-term joystick drift remains a potential concern, though not yet observed.

Overall Impression:

The Razer Kishi Ultra provides an unparalleled level of comfort for mobile gaming, surpassing other controllers in this aspect. However, the lack of a carrying case and limited iOS functionality detract from the overall experience. The absence of hall-effect joysticks is also a point to consider.

Wishlist for a Future Iteration:

Future iterations could benefit from hall-effect joysticks, smoother edges around the charging port, rear paddles, and, crucially, a carrying case.

Final Verdict:

The Razer Kishi Ultra is ideal for users accustomed to full-sized controllers, offering exceptional comfort and responsive controls. Despite the iOS limitations, it's a significant advancement in mobile gaming peripherals. However, the high price point and lack of a carrying case are factors to weigh carefully.

Rating: 4.5/5
