In a move that surprised few but delighted many, HBO has officially greenlit Season 3 of The Last of Us just days before Season 2's debut on Max.
"It can't be for nothing," Max teased across its social media platforms on April 9th. "Season 3 is coming." The announcement featured an atmospheric video with a burning crimson flare illuminating the frame.

Since its January 2023 premiere, The Last of Us has been hailed as possibly the finest video game adaptation ever produced. Its first season earned an impressive eight Emmy wins from twenty-four nominations. Season 2 sees returning stars Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal reprising their roles as Ellie and Joel, joined by Kaitlyn Dever's revenge-driven Abby. Newcomers include Young Mazino (Beef), Isabela Merced (Alien: Romulus), Danny Ramirez (Captain America: Brave New World), alongside veteran actors Catherine O'Hara and Jeffrey Wright.
Series co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann recently discussed their opposing perspectives on the enduring "Was Joel right?" debate with IGN.
"Personally, I believe Joel made the correct choice," Druckmann stated. "Faced with that impossible situation to save someone I loved, I hope I'd have his courage." Mazin offered a more nuanced take: "While I'd likely make the same decision in Joel's shoes, I'd hope for better judgment. That moral complexity is precisely what makes The Last of Us so compelling — it refuses simple answers."
The Last of Us Season 2 arrives on Max April 13th, 2025, while Season 3's release window remains undetermined. For spoiler-free impressions, check out IGN's Season 2 review.
