Zach Cregger, renowned for directing the chilling horror film Barbarian and a key member of the comedy troupe The Whitest Kids U' Know, is now set to helm a reboot of the iconic Resident Evil franchise. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a fierce bidding war is underway among four studios, including Netflix and Warner Bros., eager to secure the distribution rights for Cregger's vision of the classic Capcom survival horror series.
Cregger's most notable work to date is the 2022 horror movie Barbarian, which follows a woman who uncovers a terrifying secret within a rental house. His next project, Weapons, has reportedly been testing exceptionally well with audiences, indicating his growing prowess in the horror genre.
This upcoming Resident Evil reboot marks the second attempt to revitalize the franchise on the big screen. The original series, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and starring Milla Jovovich, spanned six films and amassed a global box office of $1.2 billion, despite deviating from the game's storylines. In 2021, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City directed by Johannes Roberts aimed to be more faithful to the games but fell short of the quality set by Capcom's series.
Constantin Film, the producer behind both Anderson's films and Welcome to Raccoon City, will again collaborate on this new project, this time partnering with PlayStation Productions. Established in 2019 by Sony, PlayStation Productions has been instrumental in adapting video games into films and series, including hits like Uncharted starring Tom Holland, Gran Turismo, the The Last of Us TV series, and Twisted Metal.
Looking ahead, PlayStation Productions has an exciting lineup of adaptations in development, such as Until Dawn, Days Gone, Ghost of Tsushima, Gravity Rush, Helldivers, Horizon Zero Dawn, and a sequel to Uncharted. Additionally, a God of War TV series and a Ghost of Tsushima anime series are also in the works, showcasing the studio's commitment to bringing beloved video game stories to new audiences.
