A newly established PlayStation studio in Los Angeles, California, is developing a high-profile, original AAA title for the PS5, as confirmed by a recent job posting. This marks Sony's 20th first-party studio.

The announcement generates significant excitement within the gaming community, given PlayStation's impressive track record with studios like Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac Games. Sony's recent acquisitions of Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite further demonstrate their commitment to expanding their first-party development capabilities.

The identity of the Los Angeles studio remains undisclosed, but speculation points to two potential origins:

• A Bungie spin-off: Following Bungie layoffs in July 2024, 155 employees transitioned to Sony Interactive Entertainment. It's possible this new studio incorporates a team working on Bungie's "Gummybears" incubation project.

• Jason Blundell's team: Industry veteran Jason Blundell, known for his work on Call of Duty: Black Ops, co-founded Deviation Games, which was developing a PS5 AAA title before its closure in March 2024. Many former Deviation Games employees subsequently joined PlayStation under Blundell's leadership. Given the longer gestation period of this team, it's a strong contender for the new studio. The project could potentially be a continuation or reboot of Deviation Games' previous work.
