Shawn Levy, the director behind Deadpool and Wolverine, is reportedly on the verge of joining the Star Wars universe, bringing Ryan Gosling along for the ride.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Levy's Star Wars film is in advanced negotiations with Gosling to take a leading role. Levy has been developing this project since 2022, with a completed script dating back to last year. He's once again collaborating with Jonathan Tropper, screenwriter for This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project, both Levy-directed films.
Plot details remain tightly under wraps. The only confirmed information is that the film is unrelated to the Skywalker Saga and is intended as a standalone movie, ruling out a trilogy.
The Hollywood Reporter also suggests that Gosling's potential involvement has accelerated the project's timeline. Levy was previously attached to direct a boy band movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. However, if Gosling signs on, the Star Wars film will reportedly take precedence, commencing production this fall.

This development comes amidst a period of transition for the Star Wars franchise. Following the cancellation of The Acolyte, Disney+ recently concluded its latest series, Skeleton Crew. On the film front, Dave Filoni's Mandalorian and Grogu movie completed filming in December, targeting a May 22, 2026 release. A new trilogy centered around Daisy Ridley's Rey is also in the works.
A release date for Levy's Star Wars film remains unannounced, pending the project's progress. For a comprehensive overview of upcoming Star Wars content, consult our 2025 preview.
