Ubisoft's Star Wars Outlaws Underperforms, Outsold by Jedi: Survivor

Star Wars Outlaws, Ubisoft's foray into open-world Star Wars gaming, is facing significant challenges. Initial positive reviews upon its August 2024 launch have been overshadowed by player criticism of its combat and stealth mechanics. These issues, while addressed in subsequent updates, haven't reversed the game's poor sales performance.

Ubisoft acknowledged in September that Outlaws fell short of sales projections, leading to a sharp drop in the company's stock price. This underperformance is further highlighted by reports indicating that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, released in 2023, has outsold Outlaws. While precise sales figures remain unavailable, Outlaws' ranking as the 47th best-selling game in Europe for 2024 underscores its struggles.

Several factors likely contribute to Jedi: Survivor's success. As a sequel to the popular Jedi: Fallen Order, it benefited from established brand recognition and critical acclaim. A subsequent update expanding its availability to PS4 and Xbox One further boosted its sales.

Conversely, Outlaws has struggled to gain traction despite ongoing updates and DLC releases. The November release of "Star Wars Outlaws: Wild Card," featuring Lando Calrissian, and the upcoming Spring 2025 release of "Star Wars Outlaws: A Pirate's Fortune" (featuring Hondo Ohnaka) aim to revitalize interest. However, whether these additions will be enough to significantly improve Outlaws' performance remains uncertain. The game's underperformance raises questions about the future of open-world Star Wars titles and Ubisoft's strategic direction.
