Suikoden HD Remasters Announced for PlayStation, Xbox, PC

After more than a decade of absence, the beloved Suikoden series is poised for a triumphant return. The upcoming HD remaster of the first two games aims to reignite the franchise's popularity and pave the path for future installments.

The Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster promises a revitalized experience for classic JRPG fans. Director Tatsuya Ogushi and Lead Planner Takahiro Sakiyama expressed their hopes in a Famitsu interview (translated via Google) that this remaster will not only introduce a new generation to the series but also re-energize the enthusiasm of longtime players.

Ogushi, deeply connected to the series, spoke of his respect for the late Yoshitaka Murayama, the series creator. He shared, "I'm sure Murayama would have wanted to be involved." Sakiyama, who directed Suikoden V, highlighted his desire to bring Suikoden back into the spotlight, stating, "I really wanted to bring ‘Genso Suikoden’ back to the world." Both developers expressed hope for the continued expansion of the Suikoden IP.

Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster: A Closer Look

Based on the 2006 Japan-exclusive PlayStation Portable collection, this remaster brings enhanced visuals and gameplay to modern platforms. Konami has promised high-definition backgrounds, creating more immersive environments. While the pixel art sprites are refined, the original artistic style remains intact.

The remaster includes a Gallery showcasing music and cutscenes, and an Event Viewer to revisit key moments, both accessible from the main menu.

Beyond visual upgrades, the remaster addresses past shortcomings. The infamous shortened Luca Blight cutscene from Suikoden 2's PSP release is restored to its original length. In line with modern sensibilities, some dialogue has been adjusted; for instance, Richmond's smoking habit from Suikoden 2 has been removed to reflect Japanese smoking regulations.

Launching March 6, 2025, on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, the Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster promises a fresh yet faithful experience for both newcomers and seasoned fans.
