Recent set photos from the new Superman movie appear to confirm earlier reports of a major DC villain's appearance. Interestingly, director James Gunn previously downplayed these reports.
In April 2024, industry insiders CanWeGetSomeToast and DanielRPK reported Ultraman as the main antagonist in the Superman film. Gunn, however, countered on Threads, stating that Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor was the primary villain, cautioning fans to only trust official sources. While Gunn didn't explicitly deny Ultraman's presence, his statement led many to believe Ultraman was excluded.
New images from Cleveland.com, however, seem to contradict this. Photographs and video show David Corenswet's Superman in custody, surrounded by characters including Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr., María Gabriela de Faría's The Engineer, and a masked figure with a prominent "U" symbol on their chest – strongly suggesting Ultraman. Gunn has yet to comment on this.
This has sparked debate among fans. Some criticize Gunn for casting doubt on accurate reports, while others defend him, pointing out he never definitively ruled out Ultraman, only clarifying Luthor's role as the main villain. DanielRPK clarified his earlier report, stating "main villain" referred to the primary antagonist Superman confronts, implying a lack of a confrontation with Lex Luthor.
The "U" symbol provides strong circumstantial evidence, but official confirmation is still pending. The arrest scene might suggest Superman is framed for crimes committed by his evil counterpart, a potential plot twist. The masked villain and Gunn's previous comments could be deliberate misdirection.
This remains speculation. Until official confirmation, fans will have to wait. However, if Ultraman's involvement is confirmed, it may affect the credibility of future Gunn statements regarding DCU rumors.
Superman is slated for release on July 11, 2025.
