According to a recent report by Bloomberg, Warner Bros. has canceled a planned paid DLC for their popular game, Hogwarts Legacy. The expansion was intended to be a story-based addition to the Harry Potter adventure game and was slated for release this year, coinciding with a "Definitive Edition" of the game.
Sources cited by Bloomberg indicate that the decision to cancel the DLC was made this week. The reason given for the cancellation was that the content volume was deemed insufficient to justify the price that Warner Bros. was considering. When approached for comment, Warner Bros. declined to respond to Bloomberg's inquiries.
This cancellation comes at a time when Warner Bros. is undergoing significant restructuring within its gaming division, prompted by ongoing financial challenges. Earlier in the year, the company made the tough decision to cancel its planned Wonder Woman game and shut down the studio behind it, Monolith Productions, along with WB San Diego and the MultiVersus studio, Player First Games. Additionally, layoffs occurred at Rocksteady Studios just last September.
Despite the setback with the Hogwarts Legacy DLC, Warner Bros. continues to emphasize the importance of Hogwarts Legacy and the broader Harry Potter franchise within its portfolio. The company has publicly declared that a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is "one of the biggest priorities" as it shifts its focus towards fewer but larger franchises. This emphasis is backed by the impressive sales figures of the original game, which has sold over 30 million copies.
