NieR: Automata allows players significant freedom to explore and tackle side quests between main story missions. Many optional elements might seem missable on a first playthrough. Completing the main game narrative is only the beginning; access to earlier side quests within the same save file is unlocked upon true game completion. Here's how to unlock and utilize Chapter Select.
This section contains minor spoilers regarding achieving the true ending.
Unlocking Chapter Select requires completing one of the game's true endings. This involves three playthroughs, culminating in a final choice during the third playthrough's concluding confrontation. While referred to as playthroughs, many consider each a distinct chapter within the overarching narrative.
After viewing the credits of a playthrough, save your game. Loading that save initiates the next section, featuring a different character. The final playthrough involves multiple character switches; its completion unlocks Chapter Select for that save file.
Chapter Select is accessible from two locations:
This menu allows selection of any game chapter from the main storyline. Progress, including weapons, level, and items, is carried over. When loading a chapter, character selection is possible, provided multiple characters were involved in that specific chapter.
It's important to note that completed side quests cannot be replayed, regardless of the chosen chapter. Saving at an access point is crucial when switching chapters; failing to do so results in the loss of any progress (levels and items) made within the current chapter. Chapter Select is invaluable for completing all content and revisiting past choices to unlock every ending.
