In the vast world of Project Zomboid, traversing the map on foot is a daunting task. Fortunately, many vehicles remain functional, and if keys are elusive, hotwiring offers a solution. This guide details how to hotwire cars in Project Zomboid.

Hotwiring is surprisingly simple, requiring minimal effort once prerequisites are met. While not demanding a top-tier character build, specific skills are necessary.

Hotwiring Mechanics in Project Zomboid

Successfully hotwiring a car allows operation as long as fuel and condition permit, even without the correct keys. However, Level 1 Electrical and Level 2 Mechanics skills are required, unless you choose the Burglar profession at character creation, bypassing these skill checks.

Hotwiring Steps:

  1. Enter the vehicle.
  2. Access the vehicle radial menu (default key: V).
  3. Select "Hotwire" and wait.

Upon completion, press W to start the engine. Remember to check fuel levels beforehand.

Skill Level Progression:

For those not starting as a Burglar, skill levels increase through specific actions:

  • Electrical: Dismantling electronics (watches, radios, televisions).
  • Mechanics: Removing and reinstalling mechanical parts.

Books and magazines also provide skill boosts, commonly found in homes, shops, mailboxes, and storage areas. Server admins can use the "/addxp" command to directly award skill XP. Appropriate tools (like screwdrivers) are necessary for dismantling and installation. Right-clicking vehicle parts and selecting "Vehicle Mechanics" allows part removal.
