Bandai Namco's upcoming title, Death Note: Killer Within, promises a thrilling social deduction experience reminiscent of Among Us, but with a distinctly anime twist. Launching November 5th, this online-only game arrives on PC, PS4, and PS5, and will be included in the PlayStation Plus free monthly games lineup.
Developed by Grounding, Inc., Death Note: Killer Within pits players against each other as either Kira, the notorious Death Note wielder, or members of L's investigative team. Matches accommodate up to ten players, tasked with either exposing Kira and securing the Death Note or protecting Kira's power and eliminating L's team. The game's core gameplay loop mirrors the chaotic deduction of Among Us, demanding players utilize strategy, deception, and a dash of luck to prevail. Bandai Namco highlights the hidden Death Note as a central element, creating a tense game of cat and mouse.

Extensive character customization is a key feature, offering players access to seven unique accessory types and special effects during pivotal moments. While online-only, voice chat is highly recommended for coordinating strategies or, as the developers suggest, expressing frustration when wrongly accused.

The game's inclusion in PlayStation Plus grants subscribers early access at no additional cost. It joins Ghostwire: Tokyo and Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged in November's lineup. PC players can access the game via Steam, with cross-play functionality ensuring a broader player base.
However, the game's price remains unannounced. Concerns exist that an overly high price point could hinder its success against established competitors like Among Us, potentially mirroring the initial struggles of Fall Guys. The latter's high price tag, despite lacking competitive features, led to declining sales before its transition to a free-to-play model. The strength of the Death Note IP, however, might mitigate this risk.

Death Note: Killer Within features two primary phases mirroring Among Us's structure. The Action Phase sees players navigating virtual environments, gathering clues, completing tasks, and observing suspicious behavior. Kira can secretly utilize the Death Note to eliminate NPCs or players. The subsequent Meeting Phase is where accusations are made, votes cast, and players attempt to expose Kira—or potentially wrongly condemn an innocent teammate.

A key distinction from Among Us is Kira's access to followers, who communicate privately and can steal crucial IDs. Investigators, meanwhile, meticulously gather and analyze clues to identify Kira. L possesses unique abilities, including surveillance camera deployment and strategic guidance during discussions.

Ultimately, Death Note: Killer Within hinges on teamwork and deception. Its success will depend on its ability to attract both existing fans and newcomers to the social deduction genre.
