Cineverse, which secured U.S. distribution rights for the upcoming Silent Hill film, confirms Return to Silent Hill will closely follow the original Silent Hill 2 narrative.
"Silent Hill stands among gaming's finest franchises, and Christophe Gans has brilliantly recaptured the games' essence with Return to Silent Hill," Cineverse acquisitions head Brandon Hill told Variety.
Director Christophe Gans stated: "I'm thrilled to collaborate with Cineverse, a partner that truly understands our passionate fanbase. This adaptation honors Konami's masterpiece Silent Hill 2 with deep reverence. We hope fans will appreciate and feel satisfied with our cinematic interpretation."
The storyline will be instantly recognizable to players of either the classic Silent Hill 2 or Bloober Team's 2024 remake. The plot follows "James (Jeremy Irvine), a shattered man mourning his lost love (Hannah Emily Anderson). After receiving a mysterious summons to Silent Hill, he discovers the town twisted by sinister forces" and encounters "both familiar and nightmarish new entities." Originally announced in October 2022, fans finally saw the film's interpretation of Pyramid Head in May 2024.
Gans' initial Silent Hill film loosely adapted the first game's story, following mother Rose's search for her missing daughter Sharon in the eerie, perpetually ash-covered town. Despite involving Oscar-winning Pulp Fiction co-writer Roger Avary, our 5/10 review noted: "Our apprehensions materialized once more - the video game adaptation genre suffers from persistent mediocrity. While Silent Hill may be the most visually impressive and intellectually crafted video game film to date, it ultimately falters in entertainment value, becoming a tedious viewing experience."

The franchise's second installment, Silent Hill: Revelation (directed by Michael J. Bassett instead of Gans), loosely drew from Silent Hill 3. Our 4.5/10 review criticized it as "a complete downgrade - a horror sequel that neither frightens nor engages, potentially delivering a fatal blow to the franchise."
Return to Silent Hill is scheduled for a 2024 release, with Cineverse planning a comprehensive U.S. theatrical rollout.
