Obsidian Entertainment's Avowed promises players a rich, multifaceted experience, emphasizing player agency and diverse outcomes. Game director Carrie Patel highlights the game's design philosophy in an interview with Game Developer, explaining that every decision impacts the overall narrative.

"The game provides constant opportunities for players to express themselves and explore their chosen path," Patel stated. She further emphasizes the importance of mindful gameplay, encouraging players to reflect on their engagement: "When are you most engaged? When are you curious? What keeps you invested?"

Patel explains that player choices and their consequences are deeply intertwined with exploration of Eora's complex world, particularly in The Living Lands, where political power is fiercely contested. "The stories connecting these worlds are a highlight for me," she adds.

Players assume the role of an Aedyran Empire envoy, tasked with investigating a spiritual plague while simultaneously pursuing their own political ambitions. "Meaningful roleplay stems from giving players depth to explore," Patel notes. "It's about defining your character and how the game's situations allow you to express that identity."

Beyond the intricate RPG mechanics, Avowed features strategic combat blending magic, swords, and firearms. "The abilities and weapon choices available lead to vastly different playthroughs," Patel confirms.

Furthermore, Patel confirmed to IGN the existence of numerous endings, with a wide array of potential combinations. "We have a double-digit number of ending slides, and many possible combinations," she reveals. "True to Obsidian's style, your ending is a direct reflection of your choices throughout the game, shaped by the content you encounter and your actions within it."
