Capcom's Continued Revival of Classic IPs

Okami and Onimusha Lead the Charge

Capcom's Past IP Revivals Will Continue

In a December 13th press release announcing new Onimusha and Okami titles, Capcom confirmed their commitment to revitalizing past intellectual properties. The goal? Delivering high-quality content to dedicated fans.

The next Onimusha installment, set in Edo-period Kyoto, is slated for a 2026 release. A new Okami sequel is also in the works, though a release date remains undisclosed. Importantly, the original Okami development team is involved in this new project.

Capcom's Past IP Revivals Will Continue

Capcom explicitly stated their intention to “re-activate dormant IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently,” emphasizing their strategy of leveraging their extensive game library to create “highly efficient, high-quality titles.” This commitment to reviving classic franchises complements their ongoing work on projects like Monster Hunter Wilds and Capcom Fighting Collection 2, both anticipated for 2025. This clearly shows Capcom's dedication to both new and legacy titles. Recent releases like Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess and Exoprimal further demonstrate their ongoing development efforts.

Capcom's "Super Elections" Offer Clues to Future Titles

Capcom's Past IP Revivals Will Continue

Capcom's February 2024 "Super Elections" allowed players to vote for their most desired character appearances and sequels. The results revealed strong fan demand for sequels and remakes of several series, including Dino Crisis, Darkstalkers, Onimusha, and Breath of Fire.

Dino Crisis and Darkstalkers, having seen their last releases in 1997 and 2003 respectively, have remained largely untouched for years. Similarly, Breath of Fire 6, an online RPG, was active only briefly from July 2016 to September 2017. The overwhelming fan response to these franchises in the "Super Elections," alongside the renewed interest in Onimusha and Okami, provides valuable insight into which dormant IPs Capcom might prioritize for future projects. While Capcom remains discreet about their exact plans, the "Super Elections" results offer a compelling glimpse into potential future releases.
