2024 proved a challenging year for video game console sales across major European markets, impacting established players like Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation. The region experienced a notable decline in new console sales, although the overall gaming market wasn't entirely stagnant.
The only significant new console release from a major manufacturer in 2024 was the PlayStation 5 Pro, an upgraded version of the existing PS5. Despite generating anticipation among Sony fans, its launch couldn't prevent a substantial decrease in overall console sales within Europe.
A report from Video Games Chronicle revealed a dramatic 21% year-on-year drop in European console sales. While PlayStation, potentially boosted by the PS5 Pro, fared best among the major players, it still suffered a 20% sales decline compared to 2023. Nintendo Switch sales fell by 15%, and Xbox Series X/S sales plummeted by a striking 48%. This downturn is largely attributed to market stagnation, with the original PS5 and Xbox Series consoles having launched in 2020 and the Nintendo Switch in 2017. Further highlighting this trend, Amazon US data showed the Meta Quest 3S outselling all major gaming consoles in 2024, suggesting a broader trend of console market saturation.
Despite the console slump, the overall European gaming market experienced a modest 1% growth in 2024, reaching 188.1 million PC and console game sales. This minimal increase likely fell short of industry expectations. A significant shift in consumer behavior was observed, with digital game sales soaring 15% to 131.6 million units, while physical game sales plummeted 22% to 56.5 million units.
Looking ahead, 2025 is anticipated to be a more robust year for the European gaming market. The upcoming release of the Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to significantly boost sales. It's important to note that the reported console sales figures exclude several major European markets, including the UK, Germany, Netherlands, and Austria. Inclusion of these markets might present a more nuanced picture of 2024's performance.
