With the release of the Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 2 and a significant update to its official website, anticipation has been high regarding the launch platforms for the new release date set for May 26, 2026. At the trailer's conclusion, the release date is showcased alongside the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S logos, confirming these consoles as part of GTA 6’s initial launch. Notably, Trailer 2 was captured on a PS5, specifically highlighting the standard model rather than the PS5 Pro.
This leaves many wondering about the prospects of a PC launch or even a release on the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2. The absence of any mention of a PC version in the trailer might suggest that Rockstar and its parent company, Take-Two, are sticking to their traditional staggered release strategy. Historically, Rockstar has launched its games on consoles first before bringing them to PC, a move that some feel is increasingly outdated, especially given the growing significance of the PC market in the success of multiplatform titles.
In an interview with IGN in February, Take-Two's CEO Strauss Zelnick hinted at GTA 6’s eventual arrival on PC. When discussing the release strategy for Firaxis' Civilization 7, Zelnick remarked, “So with Civ 7, it's available on console and PC and Switch right away. With regard to others in our lineup, we don't always go across all platforms simultaneously. Historically, Rockstar has started with some platforms and then historically moved to other platforms.” This statement underscores the likelihood of a delayed PC release for GTA 6.
Rockstar's fans have long noted the studio's cautious approach to PC releases, often citing its complex relationship with the modding community. Despite hopes that GTA 6 might mark a change in policy, the lack of a PC announcement suggests otherwise. While major Rockstar titles do eventually come to PC, the timing remains uncertain—could it be Fall 2027, Early 2027, or even a year later in May 2027?
A former Rockstar developer, in December 2023, attempted to shed light on why GTA 6 would follow the traditional console-first strategy, urging PC gamers to be patient and give the studio the "benefit of the doubt." Yet, the potential missed opportunity looms large, as Zelnick revealed to IGN that PC versions can account for up to 40% of a multiplatform game’s sales, and in some cases, even more.
Zelnick also commented on the evolving gaming landscape, noting, “We have seen PC become a much more and more important part of what used to be a console business, and I wouldn't be surprised to see that trend continue. Of course, there will be a new console generation.”
Meanwhile, the absence of a Nintendo Switch 2 logo in GTA 6 Trailer 2 aligns with expectations, although the upcoming console's capabilities remain a mystery. It's set to support games like CD Projekt’s Cyberpunk 2077, sparking some hope for GTA 6's potential on the Switch 2, especially given its confirmed release on the less powerful Xbox Series S.
