Rogue Loops: A Hades-Inspired Roguelike with a Twist

The upcoming indie roguelike, Rogue Loops, is generating buzz with its striking resemblance to Hades, both visually and in its core gameplay loop. However, Rogue Loops introduces a unique mechanic that sets it apart. While a release date hasn't been confirmed, a Steam demo offers a sneak peek at this intriguing title, slated for PC release in early 2025.

The roguelike genre's recent surge in popularity is undeniable, with developers constantly innovating. Games like Returnal showcase action-packed third-person perspectives, while others, like Hades and its sequel (currently in early access), stick to classic dungeon-crawling.

Rogue Loops clearly draws inspiration from the latter, featuring a repeatedly explored dungeon with randomized loot and ability upgrades presented from a top-down view. Although comparisons to Hades are abundant due to its Steam trailer and demo, Rogue Loops distinguishes itself with a key feature: ability upgrades are paired with distinct drawbacks, significantly impacting gameplay.

Rogue Loops' Unique Mechanic

This mechanic shares similarities with Hades' Chaos Gates, which offer powerful upgrades at the cost of temporary negative effects. In Rogue Loops, however, these downsides, or "curses," play a more significant role, potentially lasting the entire playthrough depending on player choices.

The game's narrative centers around a family trapped in a deadly time loop. Players navigate five distinct dungeon floors, each populated with unique enemies and bosses. As expected in a roguelike, each run unlocks procedural upgrades, allowing players to craft diverse builds by strategically combining beneficial and detrimental effects.

While a precise release date remains elusive, the Steam page indicates a Q1 2025 launch. Until then, a free demo offers access to the first floor, providing a taste of the gameplay. For those eager for more roguelike action, Dead Cells and Hades 2 offer compelling alternatives.
