Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto has hinted at the potential return of beloved original characters from Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Read on for details from his EVO 2024 statements, preceding the release of Capcom's Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection.

Speaking at EVO 2024, Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto stated that the return of original Marvel vs. Capcom 2 characters in a new game "is always a possibility." This follows the upcoming release of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, a remastered collection of classic titles which Matsumoto is producing.
The Marvel vs. Capcom series features characters from both Capcom and Marvel universes. The June 2024 Nintendo Direct showcased the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection, including six classic games, notably Marvel vs. Capcom 2. This game introduced three original characters: Amingo, the cactus-like creature; Ruby Heart, the sky pirate; and SonSon, the monkey girl. These characters have had limited appearances since, such as cameos in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and as cards in Capcom's card fighter games.

At EVO 2024, Matsumoto suggested the collection could pave the way for their return. "There's always a possibility," he said. "This collection will familiarize more people with these characters, who only appeared in the Versus series." He further hinted at their potential appearance outside the Versus series, stating, "If there's enough interest, they could appear in Street Fighter 6 or another fighting game." He emphasized that this re-release expands Capcom's creative pool.

Matsumoto revealed that the Fighting Collection has been in development for three or four years, involving extensive collaboration with Marvel. He explained that previous timing and logistical hurdles prevented earlier releases. He confirmed a desire to create a new Versus title and bring other legacy fighting games to modern platforms with features like rollback netcode.

Matsumoto highlighted Capcom's commitment to re-releasing legacy fighting games. He acknowledged fan demand and internal desire for these releases, emphasizing the challenges of collaboration and scheduling. He concluded that re-releasing these classic titles is the best way to currently energize the community and gauge interest for future projects.
