NetEase, the developer behind Marvel Rivals, recently issued a public apology for mistakenly banning a significant number of innocent players. The incident occurred during a crackdown on cheaters, where the game's anti-cheat system incorrectly flagged several non-Windows users as cheaters.

Mac, Linux, and Steam Deck Users Affected
The mass-banning incident, which took place on January 3rd, disproportionately affected players utilizing compatibility layers such as those required for Mac, Linux, and Steam Deck operation. According to a statement from community manager James on the official Discord server, these players were incorrectly identified as using cheats due to issues with compatibility software. NetEase has since reversed the bans and apologized for the inconvenience.

The company confirmed that they have addressed the root cause of the false bans and are encouraging players to report any instances of actual cheating. Players who believe they were wrongfully banned are advised to contact customer support. This isn't the first time Proton, the SteamOS compatibility layer, has triggered anti-cheat systems, highlighting ongoing challenges in this area.
Calls for Universal Character Bans
Separately, Marvel Rivals players are advocating for a change to the game's character ban system. Currently, character bans—a feature allowing players to remove certain characters from selection—are only available at Diamond rank and above. This has led to frustration among lower-ranked players who feel disadvantaged in competitive play.

Reddit users have voiced their concerns, arguing that the character ban mechanic should be implemented across all ranks to promote fairer gameplay, encourage strategic diversity, and provide a more balanced competitive experience for all players. NetEase has yet to respond publicly to these concerns.
