"New PlayStation Game Inspired by Smash Bros Coming Soon"

Summary

  • Bungie's mysterious game code-named Gummy Bears has reportedly changed developers and is now being developed at a new PlayStation studio.
  • While primarily a MOBA, the game is rumored to take inspiration from Super Smash Bros. with its percentage-based damage system instead of traditional health bars.
  • Gummy Bears has been in development for at least three years but could still be years away from release. It aims to target a younger demographic compared to Bungie's previous games.

A first-party PlayStation game, code-named Gummy Bears, is reportedly drawing inspiration from the Super Smash Bros. series. According to a recent report, this intriguing PlayStation project has undergone some significant changes.

The first hints of Gummy Bears emerged in August 2023, when The Game Post reported that a MOBA game with this codename was being developed by Bungie. However, a year later, Bungie announced layoffs affecting 220 employees, which was a 17% reduction in its workforce. During this announcement, Bungie also revealed plans to integrate 155 of its staff into Sony Interactive Entertainment.

These integration efforts have led to Sony establishing a new PlayStation studio, as reported by The Game Post, citing unnamed sources. This new studio, with approximately 40 employees, has reportedly taken over the development of Gummy Bears. While the game is still years away from release, the exact stage of its development remains unclear. The Game Post also notes that Gummy Bears, despite being a MOBA, will incorporate elements from Super Smash Bros.

Gummy Bears Reportedly Won't Have Health Bars, Similar to Smash Bros.

Gummy Bears is said to feature a unique health system without traditional health bars. Instead, damage is represented by a percentage that determines how far characters are knocked back when hit. Once the percentage-based damage reaches a high enough level, characters can be knocked off the map, mirroring the damage percent system found in Super Smash Bros.

The game will reportedly include three character classes typical of MOBAs: Attack, Defense, and Support. It will also offer multiple game modes and an aesthetic described as cozy, vibrant, and "lo-fi." This style is a departure from Bungie's previous work, intended to differentiate Gummy Bears and appeal to a younger audience.

Having been in development since at least 2022, the switch in developers aligns with the recent establishment of a new PlayStation studio in Los Angeles, which is believed to be working on Gummy Bears.
