Ubisoft has celebrated yet another milestone for Assassin's Creed Shadows, revealing that the game has attracted 2 million players since its launch on March 20. This impressive number marks a significant increase from the 1 million players it achieved on its first day. Ubisoft proudly stated that this launch has outdone the initial performances of both Assassin's Creed Origins and Odyssey, expressing gratitude to the community with the message, "Thank you for joining the journey in Feudal Japan!"
While Ubisoft has not disclosed specific sales figures for Assassin's Creed Shadows, the game has secured the top spot as the best-selling title on Steam. This achievement comes after Ubisoft's recent return to Steam following years of exclusivity on the Epic Games Store for their PC launches. At the time of this report, Assassin's Creed Shadows had reached a concurrent player peak of 58,894 on Steam, placing it within the top 30 most-played games on Valve's platform. With the weekend approaching, it's anticipated that this peak will increase further.
For context, Assassin's Creed Origins hit a peak of 41,551 players on Steam over seven years ago, while Odyssey reached 62,069. Given these numbers, it's likely that Assassin's Creed Shadows will soon become the most-played game on Steam over the coming days.
It's important to note that the total concurrent player count for Assassin's Creed Shadows is expected to be much higher, as the game was also released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. However, neither Sony nor Microsoft share player numbers publicly.

The success of Assassin's Creed Shadows is crucial for Ubisoft, especially following multiple delays and the disappointing sales of last year's Star Wars Outlaws. Ubisoft has faced several challenges recently, including high-profile flops, layoffs, studio closures, and game cancellations. The situation became so dire that the Guillemot family, Ubisoft's founders and largest shareholders, are reportedly in discussions with Chinese conglomerate Tencent and other investors about a potential buyout to maintain control.
Assassin's Creed Shadows itself has not been without controversy, particularly in Japan. This week, IGN reported that Ubisoft released a day-one patch for the game, making significant changes in response to concerns raised by some Japanese politicians regarding in-game representations of temples and shrines. In a notable incident, Japanese politician Hiroyuki Kada brought up the issue in an official government meeting, and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba responded.

IGN's review of Assassin's Creed Shadows awarded it an 8/10, commending it for refining the series' established mechanics and delivering one of the finest iterations of the open-world formula Ubisoft has developed over the past decade.
