Deltarune Chapter 4: Near Completion, But Release Remains Distant
Toby Fox, creator of Undertale, recently offered fans a progress update on Deltarune's upcoming chapters in his latest newsletter. The update reveals that while Chapter 4 is nearing completion, a simultaneous release of Chapters 3 and 4 on PC, Switch, and PS4 (as previously announced) is still some time away.
Chapter 4 is currently in the polishing phase. All maps are finished, and battles are playable, but refinements are still needed. Fox highlighted specific areas requiring attention: minor improvements to two cutscenes, balance and visual enhancements for one battle, a background update for another, and improved ending sequences for two more. Despite this, Fox considers Chapter 4 essentially playable, having received positive feedback from testers.
The multi-platform and multilingual release presents significant challenges. Fox emphasized the increased effort required for a paid release compared to the free initial chapters, stating the team needs extra time to ensure a polished final product.
Before the release, the team faces several key tasks: testing new functions, finalizing PC and console versions, Japanese localization, and thorough bug testing.
Chapter 3 development is complete (as announced in a February newsletter), and preliminary work on Chapter 5 has even begun, with map drafting and combat design underway.
While a specific release date remains unannounced, the newsletter included exciting teases: dialogue snippets between Ralsei and Rouxls, a character description for Elnina, and a new item, the GingerGuard. Although the three-year wait since Chapter 2 caused initial disappointment, the expanded scope of Chapters 3 and 4 (confirmed to be longer than Chapters 1 and 2 combined) maintains fan excitement.
Fox expressed confidence that future chapter releases will be more streamlined once Chapters 3 and 4 launch. The wait continues, but the anticipation for Deltarune's continued adventure remains high.
