Paradox Interactive CEO Admits Mistakes, Highlights Life by You Cancellation as a Setback
Paradox Interactive's CEO, Fredrik Wester, recently acknowledged critical errors in judgment, particularly concerning the cancellation of their life simulation game, Life by You. This admission came during the company's July 25th financial earnings report.
While Paradox reported strong overall financial performance driven by established titles like Crusader Kings and Europa Universalis, Wester openly admitted missteps in projects outside their core competency. He specifically cited the cancellation of Life by You, a game intended to compete with The Sims, as a significant misstep.
The Life by You project, representing a departure from Paradox's usual strategy game focus, saw a nearly $20 million investment before its June 17th cancellation. Wester explained the decision, stating the game failed to meet internal expectations.
Further compounding the company's challenges were performance issues plaguing Cities: Skylines 2 and repeated delays affecting Prison Architect 2, despite platform certification. These setbacks underscore the need for a strategic reassessment of Paradox's game development approach.
Wester emphasized the company's strong foundation, built upon the success of core franchises like Crusader Kings and Stellaris. By acknowledging their mistakes and refocusing on their strengths, Paradox aims to regain momentum and deliver high-quality games to their loyal fanbase.
