Director Andy Muschietti, known for It and The Flash, recently offered an update on the long-awaited Shadow of the Colossus film adaptation. Initially announced by Sony Pictures in 2009, the project has faced delays, with directorial changes from Josh Trank to Muschietti.
While the project's lengthy development has fueled speculation of cancellation, Muschietti confirmed it's still active. He attributed the delays to factors beyond creative control, specifically citing the ongoing discussions regarding budget and the significant popularity of the source material. He mentioned multiple script versions exist, with a personal favorite among them.
This update comes amidst Sony's recent announcement of several other game adaptations at CES 2025, including a Helldivers film, a Horizon Zero Dawn movie, and a Ghost of Tsushima animated project.
The Shadow of the Colossus game, a critically acclaimed action-adventure title, has influenced other games, notably Capcom's Dragon's Dogma 2. Muschietti, while not a self-proclaimed "big gamer," acknowledged the game's masterful design and confirmed multiple playthroughs. The game's creator, Fumito Ueda, has since founded GenDesign, recently unveiling a new sci-fi title at The Game Awards 2024.
Despite the 2018 PlayStation 4 remaster, Shadow of the Colossus remains a timeless classic. Muschietti's adaptation aims to translate its unique atmosphere and iconic colossi to the big screen, hoping to resonate with existing fans and introduce new audiences to this captivating world.
