Following the Game Awards announcement of a sequel to the beloved Ōkami, speculation immediately arose regarding its development engine. IGN exclusively confirms that the game will indeed utilize Capcom's RE Engine, based on interviews with key project leads.
Machine Head Works producer Kiyohiko Sakata confirmed the engine's use, highlighting their role as a bridge between Capcom (IP holder and director) and Clover (development lead). Sakata emphasized Machine Head Works' prior experience with Capcom, the RE Engine, and even the original Ōkami, enabling them to support Clover's development.
Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi succinctly stated that RE Engine was crucial, explaining that it's essential for realizing director Hideki Kamiya's artistic vision. Kamiya himself added that the engine's renowned expressive capabilities meet the high expectations surrounding the sequel.
Sakata further hinted that RE Engine might allow the team to achieve goals unattainable with the original Ōkami's technology, exceeding their previous ambitions.
RE Engine, Capcom's proprietary engine (initially developed for Resident Evil 7), powers many of their major titles, including the Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Street Fighter, and Dragon's Dogma franchises. Its typically realistic art style makes its application to Ōkami's distinct aesthetic particularly intriguing. While Capcom is developing a successor engine (REX), some of its technology may already be integrated into the RE Engine used for the Ōkami sequel.
