YouTuber Jacksepticeye, whose real name is Seán William McLoughlin, has shared his disappointment over the cancellation of a planned Soma animated show. In his video titled 'A Bad Month,' he expressed his frustration and sadness about the project falling apart after a year of dedicated work.
Soma, a critically acclaimed survival horror sci-fi game developed by Frictional Games, was released in 2015. Jacksepticeye, a long-time fan of the game, had been in discussions with the developers for a year to bring an animated series based on Soma to life. He considered the game to be among his top favorites and was eager to share this project with his audience.
However, the project abruptly collapsed when an unnamed party decided to take it in a "different direction," leaving Jacksepticeye "quite upset." He chose not to delve into specifics about the situation due to his emotional response to the cancellation. The YouTuber had planned much of his 2025 around this project, intending to focus his efforts on it, which now leaves his plans in disarray.
Jacksepticeye's disappointment stems from the void left by the project's cancellation, which he had hoped would be a significant creative outlet and a way to engage with his fans. The collapse of the Soma animated show has left him questioning his priorities and next steps, marking a challenging period in his creative journey.
Following Soma, Frictional Games released two more titles in their Amnesia series: Amnesia: Rebirth in 2020 and Amnesia: The Bunker in 2023. In a statement after the release of Amnesia: The Bunker, Frictional's creative director Thomas Grip mentioned the company's intention to move away from solely horror-themed games to explore other emotional qualities in their future projects. Grip emphasized the goal of creating immersive experiences that go beyond traditional horror elements.
