Radically Reimagined Devil May Cry Remake

The gaming industry continues seeing renewed interest in remaking classic titles, as seen with Final Fantasy VII, Silent Hill 2, and Resident Evil 4. The original Devil May Cry (DMC) may soon join this trend, as creator Hideki Kamiya revealed his desire to revisit the franchise.

During a May 8 Q&A session on his YouTube channel, Kamiya addressed fan inquiries about potential remakes. When discussing a hypothetical DMC remake, the veteran developer stated: "A remake like that - well, I would definitely want to tackle that project."

24 Years Since Original Release

Devil May Cry Anniversary Concept Art

The original Devil May Cry launched in 2001 as a dramatic reworking of what was initially planned as Resident Evil 4. The project's fundamental changes prompted Capcom to spin it off into an entirely new franchise.

Now approaching the game's 25th anniversary, Kamiya shared the personal inspiration behind its creation. He revealed that in 2000, an emotionally devastating breakup plunged him into depression - an experience that ultimately fueled DMC's intense, cathartic combat.

Kamiya confessed he never revisits his released games, DMC included. However, when encountering gameplay footage, he recognizes the title as distinctly representative of early 2000s game design. His remake vision would involve completely rebuilding the experience using contemporary technology and modern design philosophies.

The developer noted he doesn't currently dwell on the concept, as he only fully develops ideas when projects become concrete. Should the opportunity arise, he's requested Capcom entrust him with creative control, stating: "When the time comes—I'll deliver. That's my creative process."

Beyond Devil May Cry, Kamiya also expressed interest in remaking Viewtiful Joe. These revelations have sparked excitement among fans, who now anticipate potential reinventions of these cherished action classics.
