Capcom has recently unveiled plans for the Capcom Games Competition, marking their first venture into hosting a game development contest. This competition is exclusively for students in Japan and will utilize Capcom's cutting-edge RE ENGINE. The primary aim is to invigorate the video game industry by contributing to educational research and nurturing future talent. Through this industrial-academic collaboration, Capcom seeks to enhance the industry's overall strength and support the development of innovative research.
In this contest, students can form teams of up to 20 members, with each participant taking on roles typical of game development positions. Over a six-month period, these teams will work on creating a game, receiving guidance from professional Capcom developers. This process will immerse them in advanced game development techniques. Moreover, Capcom is offering winners the chance to receive further game production support, opening the door to potential commercialization of their projects.
The application window for the competition will open on December 9, 2024, and close on January 17, 2025, unless otherwise stated. Eligible participants must be at least 18 years old and currently enrolled in a university, graduate school, or vocational school in Japan.
RE ENGINE, also known as Reach for the Moon Engine, is Capcom's proprietary game development engine, first developed in 2014 for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Since its inception, it has powered numerous Capcom titles, including subsequent Resident Evil games, Dragon's Dogma 2, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, and the upcoming Monster Hunter Wilds set for release next year. The engine continues to evolve, enabling the creation of increasingly high-quality games.
