Scalebound, once a highly anticipated Xbox One exclusive, promised a groundbreaking blend of dynamic combat, evocative music, and a unique bond with a colossal dragon companion. This ambitious project, unveiled in 2014, captured the imagination of gamers worldwide, only to be abruptly canceled by Microsoft in 2017.
Recently, a video surfaced on Clovers Inc.'s X account, showcasing Hideki Kamiya and his team revisiting archived Scalebound gameplay. Kamiya’s nostalgic reflection on the game's development and his continued pride in the project, despite its cancellation, were palpable. He further fueled speculation by retweeting the video with the concise yet powerful message: "Come on, Phil, let's do this!", a clear appeal to Phil Spencer, head of Xbox. This isn't a new sentiment; Kamiya previously expressed his desire to revisit Scalebound in early 2022, suggesting discussions with Microsoft regarding a potential revival.
While rumors of a Scalebound reboot surged in early 2023, fueled by various sources, Microsoft remained officially silent. When questioned about Scalebound by Game Watch, Phil Spencer offered only a cryptic smile and the noncommittal response, "I have nothing to add at this time."
Even with renewed interest, a swift return of Scalebound is unlikely. Hideki Kamiya and Clovers Inc. are currently engrossed in developing a new Okami installment. Therefore, any potential Scalebound resurrection would depend on the completion of their current project before development could commence. However, the enduring presence of Scalebound in the conversation, years after its cancellation, offers a glimmer of hope that players may one day experience the game as originally envisioned.
