The unexpectedly high number of players overwhelmed MSFS 2024's servers, leading to widespread issues. In a YouTube video, Jorg Neumann and Sebastian Wloch (heads of the project and Asobo Studio respectively) explained that the initial server infrastructure, while tested with 200,000 simulated users, was unable to cope with the actual player volume.
The problem stemmed from the game's reliance on servers to retrieve data from a database. High demand caused the cache to collapse repeatedly, resulting in extended login queues and incomplete content loading. Attempts to alleviate the issue by increasing queue capacity provided only temporary relief.
Login Queues, Missing Assets, and Negative Steam Reviews
The consequences were significant: lengthy login queues, missing aircraft and game assets, and ultimately, a "Mostly Negative" rating on Steam. Players experienced frustrating delays and incomplete game experiences.
Wloch explained that the incomplete content was directly linked to server overload. The saturated servers failed, causing repeated restarts and lengthy loading screens frequently freezing at 97%.
Moving Forward: Addressing the Challenges
Despite the initial difficulties, the development team is actively working on solutions. They've reported progress in stabilizing the servers and managing player logins, aiming to provide a smoother experience going forward. A formal apology has been issued, along with assurances of continued updates via social media and official channels. The team acknowledges the player feedback and appreciates their patience.
