《任天堂明星大乱斗》是任天堂的跨界格斗游戏，汇集了该公司众多标志性游戏中的角色。但与游戏系列名称暗示的不同，只有少数角色是真正的兄弟——有些甚至不是男性。那么，为什么它被称为“任天堂明星大乱斗”呢？任天堂此前从未给出官方解释，但最近，《任天堂明星大乱斗》的创造者樱井政博对此做出了说明！

在他的 YouTube 视频系列中，樱井政博解释说，《任天堂明星大乱斗》的名称源于这款格斗游戏系列实际上是关于“朋友们解决一些小争端”。据樱井政博透露，已故的前任任天堂社长岩田聪也参与了《任天堂明星大乱斗》名称的确定。

“岩田先生也参与了‘任天堂明星大乱斗’这个名字的构思。我们团队成员提出了一系列可能的名称和我们可能使用的词语，”樱井政博在视频中详细解释道。然后，他们与《地球冒险》系列的创作者糸井重里先生举行了一次会议，以最终确定该系列的标题。樱井政博补充道：“岩田先生选择了‘兄弟’这个词。他的理由是，即使这些角色根本就不是兄弟，使用这个词也增加了这样的细微差别：他们并非只是在战斗——他们是在解决一些小争端的朋友！”

除了《任天堂明星大乱斗》的来历之外，樱井政博还分享了他第一次遇到岩田聪以及对这位前任任天堂社长的其他美好回忆。据樱井政博说，岩田聪亲自帮助编写了《任天堂明星大乱斗》原型的代码，当时这款游戏被称为任天堂64上的《龙王：格斗游戏》。
