"The Witcher 4 Faces Delays Due to Unreal Engine Issues"

Daniel Vavra, the creator of the Kingdom Come trilogy and a founder of Warhorse Studios, has expressed strong criticism towards Unreal Engine, claiming it struggles with the demands of creating intricate and expansive open worlds. He attributes the production challenges faced by The Witcher 4 to this engine's limitations.

"Unreal Engine is fine if you're aiming to craft a game set in a desert with rocks, but it has historically struggled with rendering trees," Vavra stated. He further criticized Unreal's Nanite technology, asserting that it falls short in generating realistic vegetation.

According to Vavra, who reportedly spoke with a CD Projekt employee, the team has been struggling to replicate scenes that were seamlessly executed on the RED Engine. This has led to significant production delays for the game.

Vavra questions the decision of studios developing open-world games to opt for Unreal Engine over custom engines, particularly highlighting CD Projekt's choice to abandon their successful RED Engine. He argues that while Unreal Engine can deliver stunning visuals, it demands high-end computers that are beyond the budget of most gamers.
