EA Ends Remote Work Policy

Electronic Arts has informed employees of its decision to permanently discontinue remote work policies, requiring a full return to office.

In an internal email obtained by IGN, CEO Andrew Wilson stated that on-site collaboration generates "dynamic energy fostering creativity, innovation, and meaningful connections—frequently sparking breakthroughs that enhance player experiences." The company now defines hybrid work as "at least three office days weekly," with plans to gradually eliminate remote positions near office locations.

EA Entertainment President Laura Miele provided additional clarification in a follow-up email, describing the shift from decentralized operations to "a uniform global work model":

These adjustments won't take effect immediately. Continue following your Business Unit's current guidelines until further updates, regardless of location. Transition periods will include a minimum 12-week advance notice, with timing varying by region. The updated hybrid policy mandates three weekly office days, consistent with Andrew's EA Action. We're establishing a 30-mile (48-km) proximity radius around EA offices. Policy implications: Employees within this radius will adopt hybrid schedules. Those beyond this distance remain remote unless their roles require physical presence. The Offsite Local model will be discontinued, with transitions taking 3-24 months depending on location. Future remote hires and exceptions will require executive approval.

Anonymous EA employees confided to IGN about widespread frustration and confusion—some facing impractical commutes, others highlighting personal challenges like childcare needs or medical accommodations that benefited from remote work. Workers classified as remote expressed anxiety about their job security if unable to relocate eventually. Sources noted existing remote employees would lose their exemptions within 3-24 months per Miele's timeline.

While remote work grew exponentially during COVID-19's peak—particularly benefiting game developers—many employees relocated expecting permanent flexibility. Recently, major industry players including Rockstar, Ubisoft, and Activision Blizzard have faced backlash for reversing remote policies, sometimes triggering resignations when employees couldn't accommodate relocation demands.

This announcement follows EA's restructuring moves, including 300 recent layoffs company-wide—a continuation of workforce reductions that included BioWare cuts earlier this year and nearly 700 positions eliminated last year.

IGN has contacted EA for additional remarks.
