Marvel Rivals Beta Triumphs, Surpassing Concord's Player Base

Marvel Rivals’ Beta Player Count Dominates ConcordNetEase's Marvel Rivals has significantly outpaced Sony and Firewalk Studios' Concord in beta player numbers, showcasing a dramatic disparity.

Marvel Rivals' Beta Player Count Far Exceeds Concord

A Striking Difference: 50,000 vs. 2,000 Players

Marvel Rivals' Beta SuccessWithin just two days of its beta launch, Marvel Rivals boasted over 50,000 concurrent players, dwarfing Concord's peak of 2,388. This substantial lead raises concerns about Concord's prospects, especially as its official launch nears on August 23rd. Marvel Rivals' player count remains impressively high on Steam, reaching a peak of 52,671 concurrent players as of July 25th. It's important to note that this Steam count excludes PlayStation players, a potentially significant segment.

Marvel Rivals Flourishes While Concord Faces Challenges

Marvel Rivals' Strong PerformanceEven after its closed and open beta periods, Concord continues to struggle, lagging behind numerous indie titles on Steam's most-wishlisted chart. This low ranking highlights the underwhelming reception of its beta tests. In stark contrast, Marvel Rivals enjoys a prominent position within the top 14 most-wishlisted games, alongside titles like Dune: Awakening and Sid Meier's Civilization VII.

Concord's struggles are compounded by its $40 Early Access beta price tag, excluding many potential players. While PS Plus subscribers gained free access, this requires a paid subscription. The open beta, accessible to all, only saw a modest thousand-player increase.

Marvel Rivals, conversely, offers free-to-play access, requiring only a simple sign-up for the closed beta.

The competitive hero shooter market is saturated, and Concord's high price point likely pushed players towards alternatives.

Marvel Rivals' Brand Recognition AdvantageMany gamers express skepticism towards Concord, citing its lack of a distinct identity in a crowded market. Unlike Marvel Rivals, which benefits from a recognizable IP, Concord struggles to establish its own unique appeal. While its "Overwatch meets Guardians of the Galaxy" aesthetic initially drew attention, many felt it lacked the charm of either franchise.

The success of games like Apex Legends and Valorant proves a strong brand isn't always crucial, and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League's peak of 13,459 players demonstrates that a powerful IP isn't a guaranteed path to success.

Directly comparing Concord and Marvel Rivals might seem unfair given the latter's established IP, but both being hero shooters highlights the competitive landscape Concord faces.
