Monster Hunter Wilds: A Deep Dive into the Starting Equipment
Many Monster Hunter players cite crafting new equipment as a major draw of the series. The satisfaction of completing a full armor set and matching weapon after numerous hunts is a core experience. This equipment crafting system, a staple since the franchise's inception, revolves around harnessing the power of slain monsters through equipment crafted from their remains. Players use their skill to defeat powerful creatures, then incorporate those creatures' strengths into their own arsenal.
In an interview with IGN, Kaname Fujioka (Executive Director and Art Director) explained the design philosophy: "While our designs are more diverse now, we used to focus on the idea that wearing Rathalos equipment would make you look like a Rathalos." Wilds introduces new monsters, each with unique, visually striking equipment. Rompopolo, a mad scientist-themed monster, for example, has head armor resembling a plague doctor's mask (see the hunt video below).
However, the developers emphasize the significance of the starting equipment. Fujioka stated, "I designed all 14 starting weapon types from scratch – a first for me. Previously, starting weapons were primitive. But since the protagonist is a chosen hunter, plain weapons wouldn't fit. I wanted even the starting equipment to feel impactful."
Yuya Tokuda (Director) added, "In World, weapon designs were consistent but customized based on materials. In Wilds, each weapon has a unique design." The starting weapons reflect the player's status as an experienced hunter investigating the Forbidden Lands. The starting armor, the "Hope" series, also received meticulous attention to detail.
Tokuda described the Hope set, with its deep emerald green hue, as a hooded long coat when completed. Fujioka highlighted the design challenge: "We paid more attention to the Hope series than any other equipment. Previous games had separate upper and lower body armor; we couldn't create a coat. But I wanted a flowing hooded coat. We achieved this by investing significant resources. We want players to experiment with new weapons, so the Hope series is stylish but not overly flashy."
Starting with such thoughtfully designed equipment is a luxury. The 14 starting weapons and the Hope series are crafted to reflect a seasoned, elite hunter. We eagerly anticipate examining their intricate details in the final game.
