InZoi dev dismisses Steam drop, cites strong single-player sales

The publisher of inZOI, Krafton, has responded to growing discussions about its declining Steam concurrent player numbers, emphasizing that as a single-player title, sales figures better reflect its performance.

The visually striking Sims competitor launched strongly on Steam, achieving an all-time peak of 87,377 concurrent players. Krafton reported that inZOI sold 1 million copies within a week—its fastest sales milestone to date. The game topped Steam’s Global Top Sellers List (by revenue) within just 40 minutes of release. At the time, CEO CH Kim stated the company intended to nurture inZOI as a "long-term franchise IP."

However, since its debut, inZOI’s concurrent player count on Steam has significantly declined, with its recent 24-hour peak dropping to 1,477. As reported by TheGamer, its peak player numbers even fell below those of the 16-year-old The Sims 3 on Steam.

IGN reached out to Krafton for comment, and the company asserted that Steam’s concurrent player metrics shouldn't dictate the game’s success, as inZOI is primarily a single-player experience.

"inZOI continues to maintain steady sales, and as a single-player title, sales figures at major update points are a more accurate performance indicator than concurrent player counts on Steam," Krafton explained.

The fixation on Steam concurrent numbers has become a contentious topic in the industry, with many developers and publishers arguing they don’t fully represent a game’s success—especially for single-player releases.

Earlier in 2024, John "Bucky" Buckley, community chief at Palworld developer Pocketpair, criticized the gaming community’s obsession with "dead game" narratives and player counts, calling it harmful for both the industry and players. Similarly, in April, Helldivers 2 production director Alex Bolle told IGN that Steam concurrents are just "one metric among many."

As for inZOI, its Steam reviews—while still "mostly positive" overall—have shifted to "mixed" for recent feedback. Since the game remains in Early Access, Krafton stressed to IGN that development is ongoing:

"Early Access marks just the beginning of inZOI’s journey, and our work is far from complete. During this phase, the team is prioritizing player feedback to enhance features, optimize performance, and refine the overall experience. We appreciate our community's support and look forward to rolling out new content updates in the coming months."

Meanwhile, Krafton confirmed that inZOI will launch on the Mac App Store and Steam in August. The Mac version is optimized for Apple Silicon, leveraging MetalFX and Core ML to match the Windows version’s performance.
