Former PlayStation Boss Shawn Layden Says Sony Can't Get Away With Making PS6 Disc-less

Former Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios CEO, Shawn Layden, believes Sony cannot afford to release a completely digital, disc-less PlayStation 6. While acknowledging Xbox's success with this strategy, Layden highlights Sony's significantly larger global market share. Eliminating physical games would alienate a substantial portion of their user base.

Layden points out that Xbox's digital-first approach thrives primarily in English-speaking countries, unlike Sony's widespread dominance across approximately 170 nations. He questions Sony's ability to ensure reliable internet access for all players, citing potential connectivity issues in rural areas of countries like Italy. He also mentions specific demographics reliant on physical media, such as athletes traveling for competitions or military personnel stationed on bases with limited internet access. Layden suggests Sony is likely assessing the potential market losses associated with a disc-less model.

The debate surrounding disc-less consoles has intensified since the PlayStation 4 generation, fueled by Xbox's release of digital-only consoles. Both Sony and Microsoft offer digital-only versions of their current consoles (PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S), but Sony has refrained from completely abandoning physical media. This is partly due to the option to add a disc drive to even their high-end digital consoles, like the PlayStation 5 Pro. However, the rise of subscription services like Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus's Games Catalog raises questions about the long-term viability of physical games.

The declining sales of physical media and the increasing prevalence of games requiring online installation, even from discs (e.g., Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor), further complicate the issue. The practice of shipping games with mandatory online installation essentially renders the physical disc a delivery mechanism for downloadable content, diminishing the importance of the physical media itself.

Would you buy the PlayStation 6 if it had no disc drive?
