Unfrozen Studio, the developers behind Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era, have unveiled further details about the intriguing Swarm faction, following an initial teaser. The team delved into the faction's design inspiration, tracing its evolution from the initially conceived "Inferno" to the final, chillingly unique "Swarm," and its role within the unfolding narrative on the continent of Jadame.
The Swarm's defining characteristic is its remarkable adaptability. Certain creatures possess abilities directly influenced by enemy unit levels – the greater the disparity, the more devastating the attack. Others, like the mantises, strategically select one of three potent abilities each round. A particularly gruesome feature allows creatures such as worms and locusts to consume corpses, restoring health and boosting their power – a skill also learnable by heroes.
In Olden Era, the demonic threat takes the form of an insectoid race, previously only briefly mentioned in Might & Magic 8. While respecting established lore, the developers infused the Swarm with elements of body horror and occultism, transforming them from a simple insect colony into a devoted cult serving a single, powerful overlord. Each member is intrinsically linked to a vast hive mind, existing solely to execute its master's commands.
Gameplay for the Swarm revolves around a "mono-faction" mechanic, rewarding players who field an army composed entirely of Swarm units, as these units synergistically enhance one another. A further tactical element involves summoning cocoons, whose health is directly tied to the army's overall size. The resulting larvae emerge as temporary units, providing dynamic battlefield adaptation.
The Swarm's aggressive playstyle is defined by its unique abilities and corpse-devouring mechanics, providing potent healing and power boosts. These abilities shift based on enemy strength, encouraging direct confrontation and offering players a novel combat strategy.
