Digital Foundry has recently unveiled the final tech specifications for the Nintendo Switch 2, highlighting concerns from developers about the system's new GameChat feature, which reportedly has a significant impact on system resources. During last month's Nintendo Direct, the GameChat functionality was introduced, easily activated by pressing the C button on the new Joy-Con controllers.
With GameChat, players can watch each other play, either the same or different games, and even see one another through an integrated camera. The feature also includes a built-in microphone designed to perform reliably across various gaming environments. The C button's chat menu is poised to be a comprehensive multiplayer tool, potentially marking Nintendo's most successful online initiative in years.
Digital Foundry noted that Nintendo offers developers a GameChat testing tool, which simulates API latency and L3 cache misses to mimic the real-world impact of GameChat on the system's performance. This tool allows developers to test without the need for active GameChat sessions. The provision of such tools suggests that GameChat may indeed affect game performance, a concern that Digital Foundry is keen to investigate further. The true impact on game performance will only be clear once the Switch 2 is released on June 5.
In addition to the GameChat concerns, Digital Foundry detailed the Switch 2's memory specifications. The console reserves 3GB of memory for the system, leaving 9GB available for games. This is a notable increase compared to the original Switch, which reserved 0.8GB and offered 3.2GB for games. As with all consoles, not all GPU resources are accessible to developers, with some reserved for system functions.

The Nintendo Switch 2 features a 7.9-inch wide color gamut LCD screen, capable of displaying at 1080p (1920x1080) resolution. This is a significant upgrade over the original Switch's 6.2-inch screen, the Switch OLED's 7-inch screen, and the Switch Lite's 5.5-inch screen. Additionally, the Switch 2 supports HDR10 and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) up to 120 Hz, allowing games to reach 120fps when conditions permit.
When connected to its new dock, the Switch 2 can output games at 4K (3840x2160) at 60fps, or at 1080p/1440p (1920x1080/2560x1440) at 120fps. These enhanced graphics are facilitated by a "custom processor made by NVIDIA." For a deeper dive into the Switch 2's capabilities, Digital Foundry's full tech specs reveal is highly recommended.
