PlayStation Co-CEO Hermen Hulst: AI in Gaming – A Revolution, But Not a Replacement

Hermen Hulst, co-CEO of PlayStation, recently shared his perspective on the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the gaming industry. While acknowledging AI's transformative potential, he emphasizes the irreplaceable value of the "human touch" in game development. This comes amidst PlayStation's 30th-anniversary celebrations, reflecting on the company's journey and future direction.

Hulst, in an interview with the BBC, stated that AI can revolutionize gaming, streamlining processes and opening up new creative avenues. However, he firmly believes that the human element remains crucial for crafting truly engaging and meaningful gaming experiences. This sentiment is particularly relevant given current concerns within the industry regarding AI's potential impact on jobs, especially voice acting, as evidenced by recent strikes by American voice actors protesting AI-driven replacements.

Market research firm CIST's survey reveals that a significant portion (62%) of game development studios already utilize AI to optimize workflows, primarily for prototyping, asset creation, and world-building. Hulst anticipates a "dual demand" in the future: innovative AI-driven experiences alongside meticulously handcrafted content.

PlayStation itself actively invests in AI research and development, possessing a dedicated Sony AI department established in 2022. Beyond gaming, the company aims to leverage its intellectual property (IP) for broader multimedia expansion, including film and television adaptations, citing the ongoing adaptation of 2018's God of War as an example. This ambitious expansion strategy might even involve acquisitions, with rumors circulating about a potential deal with Japanese multimedia giant Kadokawa Corporation.

Reflecting on PlayStation's history, former PlayStation chief Shawn Layden described the PlayStation 3 (PS3) era as an "Icarus moment," a period of overambitious goals that led to challenges. Layden highlighted the importance of returning to core principles – focusing on creating the best possible gaming experience – a lesson learned from the PS3's development. This shift in focus, prioritizing the gaming experience over multimedia features, proved pivotal in the success of the PlayStation 4.
