Sucker Punch Productions aims to refine the open-world formula of its acclaimed title, Ghost of Tsushima, in its upcoming sequel, Ghost of Yotei. The developer acknowledges prior criticism regarding repetitive gameplay and promises a more varied experience in the new game.
In a recent interview with the New York Times, Sucker Punch shed light on Ghost of Yotei's development, highlighting its commitment to addressing the repetitiveness that plagued its predecessor. Creative director Jason Connell stated, "Creating engaging open-world gameplay without repetitive elements is a significant challenge. We're actively working to counter this by designing unique and diverse experiences." The sequel will also introduce firearms alongside the series' signature katana combat.
While Ghost of Tsushima received a respectable Metacritic score of 83, many reviews criticized its repetitive gameplay loop. Common complaints included a lack of depth and overreliance on familiar open-world tropes. Player feedback echoed these sentiments, with many pointing out the limited enemy variety and repetitive mission structures.
Sucker Punch is clearly aware of these criticisms and is actively addressing them in Ghost of Yotei. Creative director Nate Fox emphasized the importance of maintaining the series' core identity: "When developing the sequel, our primary focus was defining the essential elements of a 'Ghost' game. It's about immersing players in the captivating beauty and romance of feudal Japan."
The emphasis on player agency is also key. As Sucker Punch Sr. Communications Manager Andrew Goldfarb stated in a PlayStation blog post, Ghost of Yotei will offer players "the freedom to explore" the stunning landscapes of Mount Yotei at their own pace.
Revealed at the September 2024 State of Play event, *Ghost of Yotei* is slated for release on PS5 sometime in 2025. The game promises a visually stunning and more varied gameplay experience than its predecessor.
